Singapore Remains Top Business Events Destination Despite Security Concerns, Says Director Of Singapore Event Management Company, Se7en Friday

SINGAPORE - 06/16/2017 — Singapore is a dynamic business events destination where an ecosystem of ideas, people, and technology forms a vibrant and wide network of business connections. Unfortunately the same qualities that draw in business and tourism also make the island-city state an attractive terrorist target. As officials step up their warnings earlier this month with its first-ever national terrorism threat assessment report, the global business and finance hub continues to come up with new measures in combating threats at home while urging the public to remain watchful of radicalism.

Henry Tan, head of event management company Se7en Friday said, “Singapore has been a target for a long time, but our security force has done an excellent job in preventing attacks from being carried out discretely. Even with the increased security concerns, Singapore will remain a top destination for multinational corporations and local businesses alike to conduct MICE and corporate events because there are not as many cities as accessible and accommodating like Singapore.”

With more than 150 international organizations and 7,000 multinational companies operating in Singapore, the country is lauded as one of the world’s easiest place to do business – second only to New Zealand according to the World Bank. The Changi Airport itself serves more than 100 airlines, flying to 300 cities worldwide, and serving 4 billion people within a 7-hour flight radius.

The Lion City also has a range of world-class event venues, such as the Marina Bay Sands, to accommodate any event, be it celebrating fine cuisine from Michelin-star chefs in the World Gourmet Summit, catching a glimpse of top racers in Singapore’s Grand Prix, or meet-and-greet session with J-pop idols in Anime Festival Asia.

The country continues to step up security efforts internally with a counterterrorism strategy built on four main pillars: prevention, protection and preparedness, security response, and community response. This is beyond added security measures in key entry points and public areas; Various grassroots organizations also serve to promote multiracialism and inter-communal harmony. These efforts contribute to a safe and secure environment.

These past few years, the Security Department has arrested dozens of people with links to terrorism – including 27 Bangladeshi workers in 2015 and another 8 in last year. Just a few days ago, the first female Singapore citizen was detained for radicalism. It should be noted that the last successful terrorist attack was 26 years ago – in 1991 when a Singaporean plane was hijacked by four Pakistani militants. But the situation was neutralised quickly by Singapore’s elite commandos with no casualties, let alone injuries to the hostages. This feat is due to years of diligence, considering Singapore has seen its fair share of terrorist attacks since its independence in 1965 and thus, will remain vigilant in guarding its success for years to come.
